Designated Ports & Prior Notification

Under EU and Irish legislation there are requirements to provide prior notification of landings or ‘hailing’. This procedure is in place for both national and foreign vessels.

Notifications must be submitted to the competent authority, which in Ireland is the Fisheries Monitoring Centre. Contact details for the FMC are available here

Masters of vessels fitted with ERS that are engaged in fisheries of stocks subject to a multi-annual plan must submit a Prior Notice of Landing (PNOL) at least four hours before landing. These multi-annual plan species are listed on the European Commission website.

Masters of Irish sea-fishing boats must also send a PNOL if they intend to land or tranship 150 kilograms or more of monkfish (ANF) lophiidae.

In addition, certain quantities and species of fish must be landed into designated ports. The table below lists the designated ports in Ireland and the species for which they are designated.
