French Registered Fishing Vessel Detained at Castletownbere Port for Suspected Sea-Fisheries Law Offences

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) confirms that a French registered fishing vessel was detained at Castletownbere port on the 21st of April 2024. The detention was the result of the detection of suspected sea-fisheries law offences, detected during an at-sea inspection onboard the fishing vessel in the Irish exclusive economic zone, which was led by inspectors attached to a European Fisheries Control Agency patrol vessel.

Prosecution proceedings in respect of the investigation were before Skibbereen District Court on the 23rd of April 2024, involving charges for alleged offences of fishing with non-compliant fishing gear and non-compliance with requirements for recording and reporting of catch.  The case was sent forward for trial on indictment at the current sittings of Cork Circuit Court.
