What is Catch Composition?

Catch composition is the percentage of certain species relative to the total catch retained onboard a fishing vessel. These are based on specific gears, mesh size ranges and lists of species.

Is any gear exempt?

If a vessel is towing fishing gear and has a codend of mesh size equal to or greater than 100mm there are no restrictions. If a vessel is using gillnets and is using a mesh size equal to or greater than 120mm there are no restrictions except for monkfish where the minimum mesh size is 250mm.

What are the relevant regulations?

Catch composition is primarily dealt with under Council Regulation 850/98 Annex I and VI.

Is this enforced at landing or at sea?

This is enforced mainly at landing, but the required catch composition must be attained during the fishing trip.
